Select Enable to automatically synchronize passwords in the Windows to UNIX direction for all NIS accounts that have been migrated to Active Directory Domain Services.

The forest has not been scanned for non-compatible domain controllers. If all the Domain Controllers are not SP1 or above and you enable this feature, there is a possibility that any user can view the password hash for any UNIX user that has been migrated to Windows AD. If this password were to be broken, you would be compromising the Windows password for this UNIX user as well.

Unable to start Server for NIS because the startup type must be set to Manual.

Unable to stop Server for NIS.  The startup type for Server for NIS must be set to Manual for you to use the Stop Server for NIS command.

When Windows Server 2003 SP1 is not running on all domain controllers in a forest, and Enable Windows to NIS (AD) Password Sync is selected, it is possible for any authenticated user on the domain to view the password hash for any UNIX user whose account has been migrated to Active Directory.

When all the DCs are not SP1 or above and you enable this feature there is a possibility that any authenticated user on this domain can view the password hash for any UNIX user that have been migrated to Windows AD. If this password hash were to be broken, you would be compromizing the Windows password for this UNIX user as well.
